Q: Does citing sources allow me to use more of a material?

A: No. Citing a source does not change the fact that you need to follow copyright guidelines.

Q: Can I download as many pages as I want from an ebook?

A: No. We have strict licensing agreements with vendors and publishers and they set the page limit within copyright guidelines. If you excessively download or exceed that limit, your library account will be locked.

Q: I found it on Google. I can just use it right?

A: No. Just because you found it on Google, does not mean you have permission to use it. There are settings you can add to your Google search that will show results that are free to use and have permissions from the creator.

Q: Are my pictures on social media protected by copyright?

A: Yes! If you ever find that a person or company is using your images from social media without permission, you can ask them to remove them and even go as far to take them to court for copyright infringement.

Q. Is my dissertation protected by copyright?

A: Yes. Anything your right for class, whether it's a discussion post, report, paper, or dissertation, is protected by copyright. If you decide to publish any of these materials you will have a copyright discussion with the publisher. This will change what your rights and give some to the publisher. Be sure to read these agreements carefully.

Q: I made a mistake and didn't follow copyright guidelines. Are you going to report me?

A: As your librarians, we are here to guide you and advise you not punish you. Everyone makes mistakes, but we ask that you please follow copyright guidelines moving forward.
